Consumer debt reduction is one of those things that many people need, but are a bit hesitant to do. It could be that they have seen some people hurt by the so called “secrets” to debt reduction. Or, they might think that all the super debt reducing programs are simply too overwhelming, and impractical, to try. But, true consumer debt reduction can be done with some simple tips that anyone can use.
Debt is reduced when you make the decision to begin living a debt free lifestyle. This is not an easy decision. There is a lot to entice a person today into living a life attached to a credit card. These little plastic cards deal in digital money that is based on installments. This means you buy something now and pay on it over time. With credit cards, that is a long time. This debt can be stifling. Consumer debt reduction, then, happens when you make a commitment to live a life that is free of debt.
Once the commitment is made, then things actually get easier. Make a list of all your debt and begin to implement a strategy. The best debt reduction strategy is to simply start paying them off one by one. For example, if you have several different credit cards that you are paying off, work towards paying one off completely. Continue making your minimum payments for the other cards, but put extra money towards the one with the lowest balance each month until it is paid off.
Once you get started only pay for things with cash. This means no more big screen TV’s, fancy restaurant meals, or those outfits that you just “need” to have. What it means is that if you do not have the cash – on hand – then do not buy it. As consumers that is not something that comes naturally. We have been taught that we can have what we want now without waiting for it. Saving for something is not contained in our DNA. It must be taught. Sometimes the teaching is through tough circumstances.
Anyone who is in the middle of any type of consumer debt reduction program will also benefit from talking with consumer credit counselors. Talking with an experience counselor will help explain a lot about the credit card business and how you can pay off your debt even faster. However, reducing your debt is best done with small steps and keeping your financial future in mind.
